Style Your Name

Here's the presentation for this week.

1. Follow a Tutorial. Use the PSD Tuts website to create an advanced effect on your name. This may require a lot of work and things we haven't learned in this class, but it's a good challenge and I recommend it. Not required though.
Here's the link to the list of tutorials to choose from: PSD Tuts Text Effects

2. Style your name using Brushes and the Type tool. Create a background layer, and decorate it with different brushes. You can make a pattern if you'd like. Create another layer, and put your name in it. Apply effects and styles to this layer. You can add more layers to the document to add more things to decorate with. You should use different textures and pictures to enhance the look of your name. You have to have at least 5 layers (appropriately named) but no more than 10 layers. Remember to think about the colors you choose.

Essentially this assignment is going to be an experiment in playing with layers, the type tool, and brushes. If you have questions please ask me, if I'm asking too much, let me know, and I can work with you to help you learn about something you may need for the assignment. If you're not going to use the tutorials website, at least take some inspiration from it. The site has a lot of good ideas and can help you.

DUE MONDAY 2/1/10.

Here are some examples for this project.

Layers

Here's the Layers lecture.

Choose 1 of the assignments below based on your skill level and interests. Please come to me first if you don't know how to do something and remember, Google is your friend. Google knows everything about Photoshop. But still come to me first.

1. Beginner Photoshoppers - Find photos online to make a sandwich. Cut out lettuce, cheese, bread, meat, tomato, etc so that it has no background. Stack the pieces together to make a “sandwich”.

2. Web designers - Design a simple website (or redesign one at least 3 pages) with 3 specific layer groups titled “Header, Body, & Footer” containing all organized layers from the document.

3. Photo-editors - Cut out the background in a group photo, (with more than 3 people) and cut out multiple people in photos by themselves. Put the single people behind or in front of the group so that it looks like they were part of the group photo. Think about shadows and the right balance of the people, and try your best to make it look like they belong in the photo. Add a pet in front of the group for extra credit.

DUE THURSDAY 11/12/09. Work in one of the labs on campus to complete this assignment if you can't finish it in class.

General Tools

Click here for the lecture presentation for last class. We'll have a toolbar quiz today where you'll need to know all these tools and their keyboard shortcuts (bonus). So look over this in class, so you do well on the quiz. Knowing these things will be really important for the rest of the class because I'll be referring to them over and over in future classes.

We're going to have the Photoshop experiments you all did last class and this class due today at the end of class.

Here's the format for how to name your files:
Lastname, Firstname.psd

For example, this would be my filename:
Oxendine, Brandon.psd

Welcome to Photoshop.

I'll be posting your assignments on here. See you in class. This should be fun.
